Spanish writer Munir Hachemi talks with Max Liu about his new novel, The Mulai, in which an archaeologist travels to a distant planet to study the descendants of a long-forgotten human space mission who now live inside temperature-controlled domes and worship a deity called Dog. Centuries of isolation have transformed almost everything about them. Their language has evolved around change rather than stability; familiar ideas about gender and reproduction have disappeared; even the ways they eat, write and bury their dead have become almost unrecognisable.

Drawing on the speculative traditions of Borges, Ursula K. Le Guin and Italo Calvino, Hachemi has created a funny, cerebral and mind-bending novel about language, interpretation and the precariousness of the worlds we construct.
