Minsk – Lavinia Greenlaw If, like me, you’re fed up of the recent commodification of ‘cosiness culture’ being thrust in your face on a daily basis; yes, we all know that turning on a lamp and wearing cashmere is good for the soul, now just let me sit in the dark for a while. Well then, Minsk might just be the poetry collection for you. It is full of the chilly melancholy of homesickness, misplaced desire and the sensations of being in a very cold, very brittle, very blue land. It’s all good but I particularly like ‘Blue Field’ which describes that moment when the light is leached out of a snowy landscape: “Light draws back/behind the rim of the eye as it closes. I keep my distance, as things turn blue, through stillness and distance, as everything blue is distant.” Now that makes me want to draw the curtains and stoke up the fire, and yes I will have marshmallows on top
