Libreria LibreriaJoin Magdalena Moursy and Ariana Abawe at Libreria Bookshop for Voices from Afghanistan – an evening of immersive audio storytelling, live music and poetry sharing the personal stories and cultural heritage of the Afghan community.
Hear the accounts of four Afghan women – a judge, a yoga instructor, a fashion designer, an artist – and one Afghan man who is a refugee rights campaigner, as they reflect on their lives under the Taliban regime, their experiences of displacement, and their hopes and fears for the future of their homeland.
As part of National Refugee Week 2024, in response to their theme ‘Our Home’, we invite you to experience Mehman Nawazi, the tradition of hospitality defined by warmth and generosity towards guests. Tea and Afghan treats will be prepared by Ariana’s mother Freba, the owner of Kulcha Kafe.
As we approach 3 years since the Taliban re-occupied Afghanistan in August 2021, it feels to many Afghans that the world has turned their backs and gone silent. This event offers an opportunity to gain a deeper and more personal understanding of the complex realities faced by Afghans.
Voices from Afghanistan was produced and edited by Magdalena Moursy, in collaboration with British-Afghan journalist Ariana Abawe, who supported as a research and cultural consultant. This project has been funded by Arts Council England.
This event is free to attend. You’re welcome to make a donation to the charity Learn Afghan who are working to improve the provision of quality education and healthcare for the children of Afghanistan.
