Join us for Independent Bookstore Week, featuring anthropologist and award-winning writer Sine Plambech in conversation with Bidisha about the hidden economy of intimacy that she explores in her new book Global Sex: What Sex Workers Know About Love and Capitalism.

Over years of research across Europe, Nigeria, and Thailand, Plambech followed the routes by which money, migration, gender, and intimacy intersect. The result is a deeply reported and humane work that moves beyond headlines and moral simplifications to examine the lives of women working within the global sex trade.

Through intimate conversations and long-term relationships, Global Sex asks difficult questions about labour, inequality, care, family obligation, and survival in a world shaped increasingly by borders and economic precarity. Plambech is unsparing in her analysis of the systems surrounding the international sex trade, but it is the women themselves who remain at the centre of the book.

To mark Independent Bookstore Week, we’ll have giveaways including Akoya tote bags, postcards and pin badges.
