An exhibition exploring the power of Ukrainian culture and identity through its literary and linguistic heritage.

The exhibition intends to introduce major authors and works in Ukrainian contemporary and classical literature, tell the story of resilience of the Ukrainian language, which has been preserved in spite of centuries of suppression, and share interesting facts and words related to Ukrainian culture, language, art, and history.

Since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, Russia has damaged or destroyed over 2,000 cultural objects and institutions across Ukraine. These include libraries, museums, galleries, theatres, printing houses, and other important institutions. Many cultural activists, artists, poets, and writers have joined the military, as defenders, combat medics, and volunteers, with some paying the highest price sacrificing their lives for Ukraine’s sovereignty and freedom.

We aim to celebrate Ukrainian culture and elevate Ukrainian voices at a time when its cultural identity and heritage are being heavily targeted by Russia’s ongoing invasion. We look forward to welcoming you at our bookshop for this insightful event.

As part of the exhibition, we also invite you to join us for an evening of Ukrainian poetry performance – “Between The Lines” on the 3rd and 10th of April, staged and performed by the talented @Vyr Collective – an international community of Ukrainian artists based in London.

From the classics to contemporary works, from poets who write today and those whose voices were cut short – this performance brings Ukrainian poetry to life in both its original language and English translation. Their words carry the pulse of the people that refuse to be silenced.

The performances and the exhibition are free to attend, however we encourage you to make a voluntary donation during your visit to support critical humanitarian needs in Ukraine’s frontline regions.

This project is brought to Libreria by @nadiya_ves from @sp4ukraine – an NGO that provides essential humanitarian aid, evacuation and relocation support to the most vulnerable people affected by Russia’s war in Ukraine.
